In Oriental medicine, meridians, also known as acupressure vessels, are energy pathways, a system or networking of invisible bodily energy channels that run and recharge the body’s energy fields. It is believed that through these invisible channels flows vital energy — or a life force called qi (chi). It is also believed that these 12 major meridians connect specific organs or networks of organs, organizing a system of communication throughout your body. If there’s a blockage of energy in the meridian, or an over or under energy in the organs, meridian massage techniques can be used to help remedy the problem.
Acupressure practitioners use their fingers, palms, elbows or feet, or special devices to apply pressure to acupoints on the body’s meridians, combined with the use of special herbal ointment. Sometimes, acupressure also involves stretching or acupressure massage, as well as other methods.
Three commonly used by acupressure practitioners are Large Intestine, Liver and Spleen.
